Two products, two trays, two completely different results on the shelf. If you pack fresh or chilled food, choosing between MAP and SKIN is one of the most important decisions you'll make: it affects shelf life, presentation and cost. Here's a clear comparison.
What is MAP packaging?
MAP stands for Modified Atmosphere Packaging. The tray is sealed with a film and the air inside is replaced with a carefully chosen gas mix (usually nitrogen, carbon dioxide and sometimes oxygen). That modified atmosphere slows down the bacterial growth and oxidation that spoil food.
MAP is ideal for:
- Products that benefit from a protective gas "cushion" around them.
- Items where you want a fuller, more voluminous pack presentation.
- Mince, chicken portions, sliced products, ready meals.
What is SKIN packaging?
SKIN packaging does the opposite of adding gas: it removes it. A film is heated and drawn tightly over the product like a second skin, vacuum-sealing it directly to the tray. The result is a tight, premium look with no movement inside the pack.
SKIN is ideal for:
- Premium cuts of meat and fish where presentation sells.
- Products you want to display vertically (the tight seal prevents leaks).
- Extending shelf life by removing oxygen contact entirely.
MAP vs SKIN at a glance
| MAP | SKIN | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Replaces air with protective gas | Vacuum-seals the film tightly around the product |
| Appearance | Fuller pack, the film sits above the product | Sleek, "shrink-wrapped", premium look |
| Best for | Mince, chicken, sliced products, ready meals | Premium meat and fish, vertical display |
| Shelf life | Good | Good, with no oxygen contact |
| Display | Usually horizontal | Can hang vertically |
So which one should you choose?
It depends on your product and your shelf strategy:
- Choose MAP if you want a protective gas environment and a more voluminous pack: ideal for everyday meat and processed products.
- Choose SKIN if presentation is part of the sale and you want a premium, leak-free pack that can be displayed vertically.
Many producers use both technologies across their range. The good news: you don't need two suppliers. EcoPet trays are ready for MAP and SKIN, so you can match the format to each product without changing partner.
The tray underneath matters too
Whatever the method, the seal is only as reliable as the tray. A consistent, well-formed tray gives consistent seals; an irregular one causes leaks, rejections and complaints. This is where it pays to work with a manufacturer that controls its own sheet and thermoforming, because seal reliability starts with tray reliability.
